Dan Graham is in his 40th year of coaching and has run the Monte Vista pole vault program since 2001. Before Danville he coached at Mt. Eden High School in Hayward from 1987 to 2000.

The clearest measure of his time here is the record book. Vaulters he coached hold eighteen of the twenty places on Monte Vista's all-time top-10 lists — every place on the girls' list, and eight of ten on the boys'. The only two boys' marks from before his arrival are Nehas's school record of 14'8" from 1997 and Kennedy's 14'1" from 1993.

Kevin Strand is the program's best championship vaulter. He reached the NCS Meet of Champions three years running. As a junior in 2017 he won the EBAL title at 14-04 and placed sixth at the Meet of Champions at the same height. As a senior he won the NCS Tri-Valley championship at 14-04 on fewer misses, then cleared 14-05 a week later to place fifth at the Meet of Champions — a career best and the second-best mark in school history.

Lance King is the only Monte Vista vaulter to reach the CIF State Championships. In 2007 he placed fourth at both NCS Tri-Valley and the Meet of Champions, then cleared 14'3" in the State prelims. Sean Nguyen came closest after him, placing fifth at the 2009 Meet of Champions at 14'0". Cameron Harris shared the title at the 2021 Tri-Valley Championships at 13-06, the only championship meet held that COVID season.

On the girls' side, Kaylin Terada holds the school record. She placed third at the 2011 EBAL Championships, set the record of 10'6" in a dual meet the following May, and went on to the Meet of Champions that season. Lyndsay Wong's 10'1" in 2022 is second all-time, and Alaina Gin scored at EBAL in 2018.

The program is still producing section qualifiers in his fortieth year. In 2025 Nathaniel Gilbert placed second at NCS Tri-Valley at 13-09 and fifth at the Meet of Champions, while Jeremiah Hong was third at EBAL. In 2026, sophomore Brant Yin cleared 13-04 for eighth at the Meet of Champions, with two seasons still ahead of him.

Graham coaches large groups of boys and girls every spring, from athletes who have never held a pole to section qualifiers. The all-time lists are the visible part; the rest is a lot of first bars cleared.
